How the rules work
Holiday pay: 12.5 percent
If you are paid by the hour, you get holiday pay (feriepenge). It is 12.5 percent of your pay before the labour market contribution (AM-bidrag) and income tax (A-skat). Overtime and fixed supplements count. Holiday pay is paid out when you take holiday and have ordered it on borger.dk.
Holiday with pay and holiday supplement
If you are paid a monthly salary and are entitled to pay during illness and on Sundays and public holidays, you take holiday with pay. Then you receive your normal salary during the holiday. On top of that you get a holiday supplement of 1 percent of your total pay in the period from 1 September to 31 August the following year. A collective agreement (overenskomst) can give a different percentage.
Holiday days
You earn 2.08 holiday days per month, which is 25 days over a full year. If you start or stop in the middle of a month, you earn 0.07 holiday day for each day you are employed.
Tax
Holiday pay and holiday supplement are A-income. 8 percent labour market contribution is deducted, and then income tax is withheld at your tax withholding rate (trækprocent). The calculator uses the rate you enter and does not include tax deductions. Your final tax is settled on your annual tax statement.
Frequently asked questions
How much is holiday pay?
12.5 percent of your pay before the labour market contribution and income tax. If you earn DKK 20,000 a month all year, that is DKK 240,000 in pay and DKK 30,000 in holiday pay before tax.
Do I get holiday pay or holiday with pay?
Hourly-paid employees normally get holiday pay. Monthly-paid employees who are entitled to pay during illness and on Sundays and public holidays take holiday with pay and get a holiday supplement. If you are in doubt, check your contract or ask your employer or trade union.
What counts towards the 12.5 percent?
Pay before the labour market contribution and income tax, for example hourly pay, fixed supplements and overtime. The value of employee benefits and your own contribution to certain pension and savings schemes also count. Per diems, holiday pay, pay during holiday and holiday supplement do not count.
How many holiday days do I earn?
2.08 days per month, no matter how many hours you work. That gives 25 days over a full year, which is five weeks of holiday. If you start or stop in the middle of a month, you earn 0.07 day for each day you are employed.
Do I pay tax on holiday pay?
Yes. Holiday pay is A-income. 8 percent labour market contribution is deducted, and income tax is withheld at your tax withholding rate. Young people under 18 may be exempt from the labour market contribution.
When is holiday pay paid out?
When you take holiday and have ordered it. You see and order it on borger.dk under "Se og bestil feriepenge". It appears there around the 5th or the 20th of the month after the pay period.
When can I take holiday?
The holiday period is 1 September to 31 December the following year. You are entitled to five weeks of holiday in total, and the main holiday is three consecutive weeks between 1 May and 30 September. Up to one week beyond four weeks of holiday can be carried over if you and your employer agree in writing.
What is the holiday supplement?
An addition to your pay if you take holiday with pay. It is 1 percent of your total pay in the period from 1 September to 31 August the following year, unless a collective agreement says otherwise. It can be paid out in May and August or at the time of your holiday.
